1.Embrace of the future

Description: Tall buildings, a neighbourhood of skyscrapers. Various shapes. Glass and steel materials.
The modern architecture of Kuala Lumpur has a huge difference than the traditional architecture. It has expanded from the height perspective mostly and design. Most of the buildings have more than 10 stories. The design is more futuristic, built in steel and huge glass windows and there is less use of brick. The forms and shape of each building are different from one another. The buildings are not as colourful as the traditional architecture.

2. Freezing of the Past

Description: detailed engravings influenced by the western. Shallow building, 2 stories high. Colourful painted. Pedestrian passageway. Now are mostly shops.
There is plenty of traditional architecture in Central Market. Though probably not as much as a few years back but there are still some. Then it was shops that sell rice, cocoa, etc. But now they’re still shops though the items they sell are modern clothes, pharmacies, restaurants. Most of these buildings are constructed side by side to each other. Every building is only 2 stories high. Around the windows have detailed engravings influenced by the old western culture. The buildings are painted with bright and various colours. There is a passageway for pedestrians to protect them from the sunlight and rain.

3.Transition between the Past and the Present

Description: Less colourful. No more engravings. Modern windows.
The location is a little bit further from the Central Market. But here, most of the buildings are more subtle, because it has developed from the traditional design on to a more modern design. The paint colours are toned down, so most of them are white, beige, or very light pink. As you can see, the engravings around the windows aren’t there anymore so it shows the progress of the transition. But still there are characteristics of the past as well, the building is still no more than 2 stories and there is still a passageway for the pedestrians.

4.Cultural Crossroads

Description: transformation from traditional to modern. Tall buildings, possibly more than 5 stories, no less than 10. Lots of windows. Wider construction. A little bit engravings. No as colourful.

The buildings are a bridge between the modern and traditional. Even though the buildings have grown higher, there are still some traditional characteristics. For example, there are still a little bit of engravings and with a splash of bright colours on them. But most of the building’s bright colours have been changed to white or beige. Big glass windows are constructed, and the materials has mixed with steel.

5. Collapsing Identity

Description: Not clear in what era the design is. More than 2 stories. Mixed colours.

Basically the design is a mix of traditional and a splash of modern but is not very clear. They have more than 2 stories but the bottom level is still traditional. There is a crash between the bright colours and pastel colours.

1.Embrace of the future

In the modern society, new emergent technologies and materials have significantly affected our community. It allows the possibilities for the construction of new and more complex landmark building such as the PETRONAS Twin Towers connected with a sky bridge. It consists of 88 floors that built mainly by reinforced concrete, with steel and glass facade designed based on simple Islamic geometric forms. Advance technologies have proved to be essential across all fields and should be further investigate in the coming future.

2. Freezing of the Past

The passive design features on the surface of Dayabumi and the Post Office Headquarter have the ability to control and channel natural sunlight as well as ventilation that offers pleasant ambient into the internal spaces. However, this method has decreased gradually as a result of being considered as not an important principle since active design such as artificial lighting or air-conditioning is now available to assist in operate building services. As the environment issues has become a fundamental concern for all populations, passive design is therefore plays an important roles in shaping our future world.

3.Transition between the Past and the Present

Kuala Lumpur Performing Art Centre (KLPAC) is reclaimed and refurbished from an old railway building in Sentul West. Besides, the preserved brick used on the old part, while both steel and glass applied to the new part of the building are recognisable and distinctive shows the transition between the past and the present in material expressions. Other than that, the preserved brick on the old part giving a sense of enclosure compare to the new parts built by steel and glass which offer a more open and transparent building appearance.

4.Cultural Crossroads

The photo above shows the shop houses in Petaling Street. Petaling Street was previously occupied by the Chinese but as time goes by, other races such as Malays and Indians alsodwell and does their business in this area. Traditionally, shop houses were plastered off-white colour. Later on when renovation take place, owner tends to paint the colour they favour. For example, the shop house designs by china style but with adding some texture in western or Malay texture. All the facade of shop houses is different as the ornamentation obtains inspiration from different races, such as Malay, Chinese and even European traditions.

5. Collapsing Identity

The Merana City Bank is form by simple geometric shape, with flat roof and it is symmetrical. Modern materials such as concrete, glass and steel are used to construct this building. There is no ornamentation on the facade and the windows are of ribbon windows. The identity of Malaysia is somehow lost in this building as it is of international style and seems it can be place in anywhere in the world.

1.Embrace of the future

Description :
These two luxury master piece located in heart of Kuala Lumpur best fulfil this theme. These are modern style of condominium and it is just nearby the KLCC.

Requirements:
There are many places in Malaysia which they will keep stand out in the future. High quality materials such as: steel , glass, and bricks are used in this huge and modern structure . These two buildings have the same theme but different character. It’s shown on the design of the façade where they have same windows design and same roof. For the roofs one is bigger while the other one looks like subtraction of the bigger roof. Actually these buildings which carry the same theme apply the principle of subtraction and addition. These designs bring a sense of contemporary which may represent the direction of future architecture.

2. Freezing of the Past

Description:
In the middle of crowded pudu raya area, in between of high pace of living a two story building caches eyes. A piece of history was left behind. It seems time stopped in 1914.

Requirements:
The materials used in this building are bricks, cement and wood. It held strongly for more than a decade but of course some of its part has been renovated. The window frame is made from wood and there are ornamentations added to the wall. Colourful, ornamentations and the old design make time flew back to the past. There are many historical houses like this in Malaysia which are worthy and we should pay more attention to them. It shows the old architecture until the present years.

3.Transition between the Past and the Present

Description :
The place which located to pasar seni area, among lots of old and new houses, is a modern style of condominium.

Requirements:
These red building remains the traditional design which shown in the use of number of floors, colour and also arched window. However, it has been simplified in the wall and window design where not decoration was use. The materials have been replaced by glass, steel and mortar instead of wood and natural materials which has been used in the traditional design. Arced window usually with louver converted into a glass window. These are the mixture of past and present. As it shows people like to keep their identity

4.Cultural Crossroads

Description : the temple which is important in pasar seni and just 5 minutes by walk. It is one of the historical temples in Malaysia.

Requirements:
As walking among tall new building which represents a modern culture of living, there is a building come from old times life culture, this amazing combination gives people opportunity to have a good spiritual experience during a busy life of today.

5. Collapsing Identity

Description : the old building with old materials for 1914 beside modern building which has build with good materials these recently years located in pasar seni are eye catching. Although there are many houses the same there.
As we know identity of city formed of its old buildings. Giving away of these old buildings leads to loosing identity of city. The pictures show that there is house collapsing because of not caring by the owners or authorities and in other hand there is an apartment beside which is new. There are many different between them such as: colours, decoration , design, materials , size and... This is causing collapsing of identity.

1.Embrace of the future

I believe that this visual exactly describes my vision for the future. For me, the reflection of water acts as an element to translate the vision of future which is that of a green architecture. This picture describes the perfect equilibrium between infrastructure and nature. Malaysian architecture is not only about skyscrapers. The presence of natural materials such as water, trees and green areas in this picture proves that architecture in the future will be more sensitive to the environment.
Also the shape of the foundation of the PETRONAS twin towers was created as a symbol of peace and harmony in Islam. This as well acts as motto for the future world. Next the modern technologies used to build the twin towers and the configuration of the natural elements illustrates perfectly the coherence of the architecture for the coming years.

2. Freezing of the Past

This picture taken near the central market in Kuala Lumpur shows how ancient Malaysian architecture is unique and still exists. Though parts of the building are used in the modern lifestyle, the artistic expressions of the past remain intact. The highly hand craft windows and patterned ornaments have stood the test of time. These buildings not only provide tangible evidence of way of life in the past but also serve as important visual records, impartial and faithful witness for architectural studies and also freezes an instant of time where a great deal on the ancient knowhow can be thoroughly studied. By not pulling down these buildings leave the Malay with a rich cultural and architectural heritage.

3.Transition between the Past and the Present

With this new century many Asian countries are faced with tensions arising from pressures of globalization
Fortunately local architects had made an effort to convey a Malaysian identity into architecture by using structures and elements of traditional architecture or design. This idea apparently can be seen in the picture a concrete building with round pillars but with a Malaysian styled structure and design.

4.Cultural Crossroads

In this picture we can see a fusion of different culture and traditions.
It also reflects the numerous cultural influences on the identity of modern Malaysia, and its inhabitants speaking English in addition to Malay, Mandarin and even Urdu, Tamil or Hindi. The shop owners and the shoppers are a fascinating mix, from local Malay-Chinese-Indian to foreigners from various European, Asiatic and African continents.
A bustling but peaceful shopping stalls, the inhabitants are challenged to reconcile the old and the new in their lifestyles, culture and business ventures

5. Collapsing Identity

In this picture we can see that the main building is apparently of an European architecture with modern advertisements in new technology such as mobile phones, iPod etc. However the detailing and ornaments belong to another cultural background that is of Malaysian architecture.
The materials and colour used for this structure tend to resemble more east Asian architecture. Hence it can be said that the design of this building has been greatly influenced by modern and traditional architecture which brings to a collapsing of identity.

1.Embrace of the future

Description: A wall beside the entrance of KLCC, with a lot hanging pole, texture tiles wall, a steel pillar and some windows view as well.

Explanation: A wall with lots of hanging pole. Usually it’s a pole for hanging flags, but nowadays it can be multifunction. A lot of company and shopping complex, were using this kind of pole to post or hang some advertisement for their product. It’s easy and nice, because it’s just beside of the façade of the complex. It’s a good way to attract consumer from the façade.

2. Freezing of the Past

Description: A building beside the Petaling Street. Old style windows and the wall color representing the old time building style.

Explanation: This kind of windows style, was really touching the pieces inside me. And this kind of color walls, was really the same with all kind of these old house, at the old town. Looking at this building, always reminding me, my grandparents at an Old Village, a place with my children memory.

3.Transition between the Past and the Present

Description: Entrance of KLCC. A manual door with steel and glasses. Ordinary materials, but with designed style, to let a normal manual door still using for now.

Explanation: A manual door, it’s an old style door with ordinary materials. Adding repetition design principle, to apply new look. Nowadays, an automatic door is very command, but why there’s still a lot of shopping complex and company still using this kind of old style door? It because it’s a link, a link between old and modern, of cause the automatic door is more easy and fast then manual door. But there’s an electro wastage for it. These kind of doors, applied new principle, design and a better visual.

4.Cultural Crossroads

Description: Pond at KLCC. A pond with a lot of green plants. And also designed the places, the trees, the floors, the field.

Explanation: A pond side. Very long time ago, we don’t have supermarket. People hanging out at park, garden, beach, river and etc. these all were have the same point, pond or water. Pond always a choice to hanging out, because beside the pond, have better temperature. And it’s look more romantic also, it’s a choice for couple, and also family walk. The site look really free, having some green grass, trees. With new style tiles, to have some texture so that people wouldn’t fall slip. It’s really awesome to have a place with green, pool, and a sidewalk beside it.

5. Collapsing Identity

Description: Roof covering the whole Petaling Street. The materials, plastic and metal. The build style were mixing the new generation design but with an old idea from the roof.

Explanation: This roof, was at Petaling Street near central market. And this roof with a new style design, having better air flue, a better visual and also those materials is much more better than the old style roof. But the function of the roof will never change. It took better comfort for people, provide a shaded place and of cause rain. At the past people usually make roof for houses. But nowadays, it’s already applied on many place like bus stop or even road.

1.Embrace of the future

Description: this is represents the theme of Embrace Of The Future because it use many Modern design, like the material have a lot of Stainless steel, Iron, glass and arsenic concrete. There is shopping mall of KLCC,

REQUIREMENT: That picture is embrace of the future, modern building all around the KLCC, the building material is steel , glass, arsenic concrete, composite plastic. Most of the building is so high, glass with steel is a alternative form for future architecture, it isn’t have many pattern on appearance, that is different to some old building,. This style has been generally designated as modern.

Requirement: that is a old Malaysia architecture steely, the appearance have many patterns, and windows is aligned, on the roof also have different design, there also don’t use steel with the glass, I think that is A kind of Timber. the old building rarely to use steel on the surface, most of use concrete, usually is not so high, about 2 floor.

3.Transition between the Past and the Present

Description: i think that is transtition berween the past and the present, look at the surface, there don’t have many steel and glass, but it also look ont old, cause its high and the shape is irregular. And the cavity shape is so Malay…

Requirement: for that building, it use cement ,iron, that building is keep simple and brief style, such the window and wall, like some traditional Architecture, and also looks so modern, cause the shape is irregular, and that is a high building. For the material, I think cement is transition between past and the present,

4.Cultural Crossroads

Description: there is Malaysia and China architecture cultural crossroad, the temple obvious is china style, and the house around that is Malaysia ordinary building. So I chose this visual for the cultural crossroads.

Requirement: the china building style is very especial, red and yellow is the main colors, cause at ancient the palace is red and yellow. and always have each kind of dragon on the roof or gate, also Chinese architecture have lot of pattern on the wall, I think that is very traditional .and the material is cement, glass. Malaysia ordinary architecture has regular shape. Also the material is use cement.

5. Collapsing Identity

Description: I chose this visual for collapsing of identity, cause that is a Indian church. the statue have full-bodied of Indian item. And the roof have some texture, that also is Indian architecture style. And I take that photo near the china town, I think that is very traditional and identity’s building

Requirement: that is very traditional architecture, the material is cement, and the statue’s texture is smooth, the pattern on the top look like roof of muslim mosque.
