1.Embrace of the future
Description:
Avenue K is located on Jalan Ampang, next to the KLCC. The complex is a hip shopping haven complimented by a classy, city-living address, "K Residence". Avenue K aims to create a "shopping culture, where lifestyle, aesthetic and social elements converge." It boasts internationally acclaimed fashion brands.
Requirements:
This building has a modern design with float glass exterior. The simple rectangular window design giving it a contemporary look and create a sense of simplicity. It is a tall cylinder building with special roof design . The top of this building is like a staircase which growing higher in a semi circular form. The semi circular form brings a meaning of embrace and this simple, modernised building with a big rectangular time clock at the centre is suitable to represent the theme ‘Embrace of the Future’.
2. Freezing of the Past
Description:
This is a façade of a shop which located at Central Market. Central Market is an historical place where we can still see a lot of past time architecture design.
Requirements:
This is a window design in many year ago which is a traditional design for Malay house. It is truly showing the old style design as the window is wooden made and the wall is colourful. Besides that , you can see that many ornamentations were added to the wall and window which is totally different from the modern design that emphasize on simplicity. The arched window design is also represent the past. Overall you can see and feel that it is an old and traditional design which express essence of design in the past.
3.Transition between the Past and the Present
Description:
This is a balcony of a café inside KLCC. This café is on the second floor and it’s facing the park of the KLCC .
Requirements:
This is a combination of modern design and past design which shows on the entrance. There are two entrances. The outer entrance is made from clear glass while the inner entrance is made from wood. The inner entrance took the form of traditional Malay house window. However, it is being redesigned as a sliding door compared to the swing door or window. The outer glass door frame is metal frame. Metal is the material that mostly used in nowadays but not in the past because they usually use natural material like wood in construction. This shows that the past and present design have merged.
4.Cultural Crossroads
Description:
This is the shop’s façade of KLCC .It is in front of the park in KLCC.
Requirements:
In this façade /wall of the shop , you can see the use of yellow colour and light brown colour. There are also patterns all over the surface of the wall but it is not obvious. KLCC is such a modern building. However , the use of patterns and colour have incorporated to this contemporary design which usually used in traditional design. It shows that this design has brought up a new identity to this modern building. Even though, there are also float glass windows which is a modern design being put together with the yellow wall and patterns. The colours have been change to lighter colour to suit the theme of KLCC. Overall , it is a mixture of design and it create a new character into it where it called cultural crossroads.
5. Collapsing Identity
Description:
The location of this place is the Petaling Street. In the heart of KL's bustling Chinatown is Petaling street located. The road is closed to traffic and the street comes alive with stalls, restaurants and crowds.
Requirements:
There are two rows of shops on the street. This street is a historical place where all the shops have old design even some have been renovated. There is a shelf on the top which is using modern design concept. Applied a modern design of shelf in such an old place makes it lost it identity. The shelf did not suit the theme of the street and shops. It’s also did not shows the characters of it and cause it identity collapsed. The shelf crashed with traditional old shops.
