1.Embrace of the future

Petronas twin towers are the tallest twin towers in the world. Their modern features, steel and glass facades show the post-modern architecture in Malaysia. It shows the latest expression and uses the Islamic motifs and Islamic influenced floor plan to reflect the national religion of Malaysia. With the technology, large scale building is built to resemble the strong economy of the country. This building is best example for showing the latest expression of architecture in Malaysia.

2. Freezing of the Past

This building is built in british colonial era. Shop lots were first introduced and tend to be more elaborated and in small scare. The expression is more toward to the western classical where there where elaborated columns and decorative arches. Glass windows were introduced. The decorative façade of the shop house showing the influenced of western architecture. The shop houses were introduced because of the trading and commercial purposes.

3.Transition between the Past and the Present


Royale chulan hotel. Located in klcc area.
This modern building is built based on the traditional malay architecture. The roof is adapted from the malay traditional house. This modern building is more elaborated with malay architectural ornament. This is an example how traditional elements adapted into the modern architecture. Instead of using timber, concrete is used but with brown cladding to indicate the colour of timber to create a traditional malay architecture expression.

4.Cultural Crossroads

This shop houses express the mixture of western influence and local adaption. The western classical architecture is used where decorative pillars and arches to show the western influence. Besides, local adaptions like louvers are used instead of glass window to suit the local climate, which is the purpose of ventilation. It is where different cultures mix together to create is different form of architecture.

5. Collapsing Identity

This shop house show the collapsing of identity where aluminium glass windows are used and no much elaborated . with the used of metal roof decking, bringing no identity which its expression. The architecture is common in Malaysia as the construction is cheaper and simple compare to others. Without clear local architecture expression nor western influenced, collapsing identity obviously happened.
